This is it!  As Apollo Creed told Rocky Balboa…there is no tomorrow! Well, actually there are six district games on Saturday, but you get the point. While some teams were forced to do some scoreboard watching Friday night, others just needed to take care of business on the field to either enhance their playoff positioning or just qualify for the district postseason. While the WPIAL girls volleyball playoffs were rounding out round one, the boys on the pitch were into Quarterfinals action on a rainy and chilly Thursday evening. No major surprises at the WPIAL Boys and Girls Cross Country Championships, just lots of wind, rain and mud. The competitors battled challenging conditions and a 3.1 mile course that had very few blades of grass remaining at the end of a long day at Cooper’s Lake. On the girls side, Quaker Valley won their third straight Class AA title, scoring just 36 points, the Quakers had all five runners place in the top eleven. Three of the four finalists in the 2011 PIAA Girls Team Tennis Championships were from District 7 as 2011 WPIAL champions Peters Township in AAA and Sewickley Academy in AA became 2011 PIAA Girls Team Tennis champions Saturday in Hershey. For the fourth straight year, a pair of District 7 teams in the Class AAA finals as Peters Township beat defending state champion Shady Side Academy 5-0 to capture their third PIAA crown in six years. Welcome to Week 9 of the high school football season. Two conference titles could be decided on Saturday as Slippery Rock tries to sew up the PSAC West crown while Westminster tries to knock off three time champion Thomas More. This is it, week nine and we will wrap up a fabulous 2011 WPIAL football regular season this weekend and pack our bags to get on the Highway to Heinz next Friday night.
