The 2013 PIAA Class AAA Boys Team Tennis Finals ended the same way the 2012 championships ended a year earlier, with District 1 champion Conestoga beating WPIAL winner Shady Side Academy as the Pioneers captured their third straight state title. In Class AA after Sewickley Academy lost in the Semifinals, Wyomissing won a second straight PIAA crown by beating Lancaster Country Day Saturday in Hershey. One superstar female athlete is winding down her historic scholastic career while another is not even halfway through and she's breaking records. It was a two team show Thursday at the WPIAL Track and Field Individual Championships from Baldwin High School on the boys side. In AA, the Washington Little Prexies returned to their peak form and performed well, taking the majority of the medals. The Little Prexies goal going into the event was to avenge their second place finish in last year’s 4x100 meter relay and they were successful. Class AAAA and Class AA teams had their fun in the sun on Tuesday, now it was time for WPIAL Class AAA and Class A teams to enjoy their postseason lid-lifters. Some of the game might have been closer than expected, but in the end, the top four seeds in both classifications are moving on to the Quarterfinals next week. A year ago, it was the Year of the Indians in district girls lacrosse with Peters Township winning their fourth WPIAL crown and first since 2009 while North Hills captured its second straight Division II championship. While North Hills has been eliminated, Peters Township is Final Four bound in D-1. The District 7 boys volleyball playoffs continued to go chalk in the Quarterfinals on Thursday with one Class AA exception. Before the softball postseason started in District 7, we knew there would be a new Class A champion with Chartiers-Houston now playing for Class AA gold. After winning three WPIAL Division II boys lacrosse titles in the last four years, Hampton has been eliminated in the Division I Quarterfinals in the district postseason bracket, which means there will be two new WPIAL champions crowned the the postseason concludes. The turn-around from the First Round to the Quarterfinals was a quick one for all but one WPIAL baseball playoff team. 63 teams cut to 32 on Monday, then 32 shrunk to 16 48 hours later. But now the Final Four is set in each classification with the Semifinals set for next week.
