One of the busiest high school football Saturday's in the WPIAL took place on the seventh Saturday thanks to Homecoming festivities at Ambridge, Shady Side Academy, Beaver and Burgettown high schools. Plus normal Saturday action at Summit Academy, Riverview and Western Beaver gave us plenty to choose from when 'Stretching' for the starz of the day. If Braydon Toy isn’t the smallest quarterback in the WPIAL, he ranks down there with the tiny guys. But you will find big statistics in this little Toy. Toy is only 5 feet 6 inches tall, but has been gigantic for the Kittanning Wildcats. He became the starter only last season and has started 16 games. But he went over 4,000 yards offense last week. Toy now has 4,116 yards. This season, he has completed 64 of 106 passes for 1,198 yards and also rushed for 473 yards on 60 carries. He has helped Kittanning to a 4-2 record. There goes Moon and here comes Mars.” OK, so maybe I took some liberties with that children’s song just a bit, but the point was that it’s Week 7 and it’s time for the MSA Sports ‘Stretch Run’. The West Allegheny Indians (6-4) kept their playoff hopes alive Thursday by beating the McKeesport Tigers (0-9), winning in sweep set fashion, 25-5, 25-5 and 25-11.  The Indians are preparing for playoff action and they looked the part in this contest.  With scoring runs of 7, 11, 12 and a string of 4-0 runs throughout the first two sets.  Thus, staging the final match clinching set to win the WPIAL AAA Section 5 clash.  Juniors Lauryn Long and Alyssa Placha were great on both sides of the court for the Indians.  Junior Long couldn’t be stopped with her ...

Carlynton (7-3) got a massive fight from underdog Brentwood (3-7), but prevailed 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-15) in a WPIAL Class A Section 2 volleyball showdown on Thursday night at Brentwood High School. With the win the Cougars clinched a WPIAL playoff birth and eliminated Vincentian Academy from a possible postseason appearance. Brentwood was hurt early by a number of unforced errors. The Spartans committed 15 unforced errors in the opening set, but were still able to grab a 13-12 lead thanks to five kills from Sophomore Hannah Livingston. Following a three year hiatus, Peters Township is back on top of the WPIAL Class AAA boys golf world after claiming the title Thursday afternoon at the Cedar Brook Golf Course in Belle Vernon. The Indians won by 18 strokes over runner-up Pine-Richland while 2013 champion Upper St. Clair finished in fifth place, two spots behind 2012 team champion Pittsburgh Central Catholic. Jake Sollon led the way for Peters Township with a low score of 72. The championship is the fifth in school history for the Indians. There was no three-peat for the Penn-Trafford Warriors girls golf team as they finished a distant fourth to the new queens of the Triple-A course, the Central Valley Warriors. In fact, everybody was a great distance behind the Warriors who scored a 316, 20 strokes better than runner-up Peters Township. Maddie McDaniel led Central Valley with a score of 75.  Sewickley Academy was even more dominant in the smaller Double-A field as the Panthers scored a 389, 30 strokes better than second place finisher Mount Pleasant to win the district title. The NEC kicks off conference play in week 6 of the local college football season. Slippery Rock continues to be ranked in the D-II top 25, while W & J moved up the polls after a huge win over Thomas More last week.
