It was a good start for the District 7 teams on Tuesday in the 2014 PIAA Girls Team Tennis Playoffs as five of the six advanced out of the opening round. Defending WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA champion North Allegheny will be joined by Shady Side Academy and Mount Lebanon for the state Quarterfinals Friday in Hershey, while District 7 finalists Sewickley Academy and Indiana will represent the WPIAL in Class AA. The gold rush continued Wednesday for the Central Valley girls golf team as the Warriors captured the 2014 PIAA Class AAA Girls Golf team championship with a four stroke victory at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York. It was the third straight state crown captured by Central Valley. Junior Maddy McDanel shot a low score of 75 among all the girls AAA participants while teammates Krista Sudar (89), Alex Bozich (92) and Amanda Scala (96) registered the four best scores and were the only team to have all four top scorers under 100 strokes. It was a good night for the three top-seeds and all three #5-seeds Wednesday night in the district soccer playoffs. Top teams Seneca Valley, South Park and Greensburg Central Catholic all won to advance to their classifications third round where they will face the three #5-seeds in Penn-Trafford, Montour and Mohawk. The opening round of the district girls volleyball playoffs is halfway home with ALL of Class AAA and half of Class AA in the books. There were few surprises with only #10-seed Pine-Richland in AAA and #11-seed Beaver in Class AA advancing to the Quarterfinals with victories over lower seeds. This is the 21st year the WPIAL has hosted a postseason tournament and while the years have come and gone, the names of the champions for the most part have remained the same. In Class AA, Shady Side Academy has won the title three straight years and 13 of the 20 years. In the 17 years there has been a Class AAA champion crowned, defending champion North Allegheny has captured gold in 12 of them. A pair of WPIAL golfers won state crowns in the two day PIAA Individual Golf Championships Tuesday at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York. A pair of sophomores, Sewickley Academy's Jason Li and Greensburg Central Catholic's Olivia Zambruno held on to win Class AA state titles after leading or being tied for first after Day One on Monday. 52 teams have now been sliced to 24 teams as the two week journey that will end up at Highmark Stadium in Station Square on the final day of October and the first day of November is underway in the district postseason with Round One in the books.
