In the WPIAL Class AA Boys Volleyball Championships Thursday at Baldwin High School, the Ambridge Bridgers defended their title with a 3-0 sweep of the Derry Trojans. It's their fifth WPIAL AA title in the last six years.In game one Both teams played well early and the game was tied 5-5 before Ambridge took control. Too many unforced errors did in the Trojans as the Bridgers went on a 9-1 run to lead 14-6 on their way to a 25-17 game one victory.In game two the Trojans keep it closer and the game was tied at 9-9. It took and extra 24 hours and then some, but it is official. It will be the top-seed against the third-seed in all four district softball championship games. The #1-seeds: Canon-McMillan, Greensburg-Salem, Deer Lakes and Neshannock will play for WPIAL gold against the four #3-seeds: North Allegheny, Ambridge, Riverside and Carmichaels. Pitching took center stage in the Final Four with five shutouts and a total of three runs allowed in the three other final results. In the end, South Park and Quaker Valley remain unbeaten and the first top-seed of the district postseason fell as Serra Catholic fell in Class A. While six of the district softball semi's beat Mother Nature on Wednesday, the two other contests that didn't make were in another battle of beat the rain on Thursday. In the end, the Final Four contests over two days produced dominating performances by teams and individuals, an unreal comeback, a see-saw shootout, a marathon game and perfection. Does good pitching beat good hitting? It certainly did on a warm and sunny Tuesday. There were eight WPIAL baseball games. Five ended in shutouts and the combined score of the losers in the other three games was three…one run each. In the movie 'Groundhog Day', Bill Murray kept waking up to February 2nd, no matter what happened on the previous day. That is how district boys volleyball teams must feel. They keep waking up and North Allegheny and Ambridge are wearing the gold. It was a titanic struggle, but North Allegheny captured its seventh Class AAA title in a row with a thrilling five game victory over Bethel Park. A couple of thrillers at drenched Martorelli Stadium in the North Hills produced gold for one decorated program and one first time champion. Peters Township won the Battle of the Indians with Shady Side Academy to capture the schools second straight and fifth WPIAL Division I title in the last seven years while Shaler is celebrating a first ever WPIAL girls lacrosse Division II crown as the Titans edged the Chartiers Valley Colts. The 2013 WPIAL Softball Playoffs resumed in Week Two on Monday with Round Two action in all four classifications. In the fifth anniversary of WPIAL boys lacrosse, won school captured gold for a third time while the other enjoyed their first ever golden crown. Mount Lebanon held off North Allegheny in the Division I finals to keep their streak of winning every other year in tact (2009, 2011 and 2013) while Seton-LaSalle knocked off the Quaker Valley Quakers for the Rebels first ever WPIAL boys lacrosse championship in the Division II title match.
