The 2013 WPIAL Softball Playoffs resumed in Week Two on Monday with Round Two action in all four classifications. The top two seeds in each classification have qualified for the Final Four, but there are some surprises as well into the Semifinals. Winning a WPIAL boys lacrosse title has never happened for the North Allegheny Tigers. Winning a WPIAL boys lacrosse championships has become very odd. While the Tigers will play for their first crown on Thursday, the Blue Devils are trying for their third after winning it all in 2009 and in 2011. With the exception of Class A where the top four have advanced as predicted, each of the other three tournaments has at least one surprise crashing their third round party. She is only a sophomore, but it’s not too early in Brianna Schwartz’s career to come to this conclusion: She is one of the top distance runners in the history of the WPIAL.Schwartz had already done some impressive things during her career, and what she did at Thursday’s WPIAL track championships put her among the best in WPIAL history. The 2013 PIAA Class AAA Boys Team Tennis Finals ended the same way the 2012 championships ended a year earlier, with District 1 champion Conestoga beating WPIAL winner Shady Side Academy as the Pioneers captured their third straight state title. In Class AA after Sewickley Academy lost in the Semifinals, Wyomissing won a second straight PIAA crown by beating Lancaster Country Day Saturday in Hershey. One superstar female athlete is winding down her historic scholastic career while another is not even halfway through and she's breaking records. It was a two team show Thursday at the WPIAL Track and Field Individual Championships from Baldwin High School on the boys side. In AA, the Washington Little Prexies returned to their peak form and performed well, taking the majority of the medals. The Little Prexies goal going into the event was to avenge their second place finish in last year’s 4x100 meter relay and they were successful. Class AAAA and Class AA teams had their fun in the sun on Tuesday, now it was time for WPIAL Class AAA and Class A teams to enjoy their postseason lid-lifters. A year ago, it was the Year of the Indians in district girls lacrosse with Peters Township winning their fourth WPIAL crown and first since 2009 while North Hills captured its second straight Division II championship.
