  Only one more week remains in the 2014 WPIAL football regular season. But before we get there, let’s look back one last time at a thrilling eighth week that featured big games, bigger wins and tons of playoff clinchings. A pair of WPIAL golfers won state crowns in the two day PIAA Individual Golf Championships Tuesday at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York. A pair of sophomores, Sewickley Academy's Jason Li and Greensburg Central Catholic's Olivia Zambruno held on to win Class AA state titles after leading or being tied for first after Day One on Monday. This is the 21st year the WPIAL has hosted a postseason tournament and while the years have come and gone, the names of the champions for the most part have remained the same. In Class AA, Shady Side Academy has won the title three straight years and 13 of the 20 years. In the 17 years there has been a Class AAA champion crowned, defending champion North Allegheny has captured gold in 12 of them. 52 teams have now been sliced to 24 teams as the two week journey that will end up at Highmark Stadium in Station Square on the final day of October and the first day of November is underway in the district postseason with Round One in the books. Two of the three defending district girls volleyball champions are on top of the pack heading into this years postseason tournaments. Both AA Freeport and A Bishop Canevin are #1-seeds while defending AAA champion North Allegheny is in the middle of the pack. Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook” as we continue our comprehensive preview of the 2014-15 high school hockey season. Today we take a look at the teams vying for the Class A championship. There were six WPIAL teams in action on the Eighth Saturday of the 2014 high school football season and only one of them will be enjoying a ride on the Highway to Heinz in two weeks. While it has been a season to shine for defending Class A champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, the days other two road warriors, Mohawk and Riverview also had reason to be beaming on an overcast, chilly day. Neshannock High School has never gotten much attention for football, and not just because the small Lawrence County school is on the outer edges of the WPIAL. Neshannock hasn’t gotten much attention because the football team had been one of the least successful in WPIAL history – until lately. What is going on the past few seasons at Neshannock is really one of the biggest turnaround stories in the WPIAL in a long time. And this year, the story might have a perfect ending.
