At the rate he is passing, Pine-Richland quarterback Ben DiNucci has a good chance to become the 17th player in WPIAL history to throw for 5,000 career yards. While that is an impressive feat, Pine-Richland does thro the ball often. So DiNucci will naturally pile up yardage. What might be more impressive about DiNucci is his accuracy. DiNucci is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior who you probably wouldn’t want to play in darts. Sure, in Pine-Richland’s spread offense, DiNucci throws a number of short passes. But he still throws downfield and his accuracy is uncanny. Consider that in this year and...

The first district championships of the 2014-2015 school year were decided Thursday with a pair of first time title winner crowned at the Shady Side Academy tennis courts Thursday afternoon. The battle of sisters never really materialized in the Class AA finals as junior Alyvia Kluska and sophomore Michaela Kluska played four games, then shook hands and announced that Alyvia would win the title via default. Last year, the two sisters were scheduled to meet in the consolation match and older sister Alyvia forfeited so younger sister Michaela could qualify for the states. Both sisters...

In a pivotal early season matchup between two teams struggling to find consistency, the Vincentian Academy Royals staged a huge rally in defeating the Brentwood Spartans on their home court by a score of 3-2.  While Vincentian Academy started strong in the first two games of the match by grabbing early leads, the Spartans would eventually battle back and win both by scores of 25-23 and 25-22.  Brentwood was paced early on by the attacking of their outside hitters, Kaitlyn McNamara, Hannah Livingston and Alexis Wagner and by getting some excellent blocks for key points by middle...

Welcome to Week 4 of the high school football season.  Throughout the first two weeks of the season, Chick’s Picks had seen remarkable scores posted by Clairton—70-0 over California and 86-0 over Wilkinsburg.  Despite heavy criticism from the peanut gallery that the Bears were running up the score, opposing coaches did not seem to share that opinion.  So, Chick’s Picks decided to head out to Westmoreland County last Friday night to bear witness as Clairton took on Greensburg Central Catholic. The trusty MSA Sports Press Pass was good enough to get her a spot on the field, and...

Week three of WPIAL football saw, quite possibly, the game of the year. So it's no surprise that the top game also featured the top play. Beyond that, we had a game-winning touchdown pass, a game-clinching interception and a pick-six that went coast to coast. Week four is just around the corner, so don't waste any time listening to the Plays of the Week! 1. Apollo-Ridge 44, Kittanning 41 (OT) In a back-and-forth A-K Valley battle for the ages, Apollo-Ridge edged Kittanning 44-41 in overtime, birthing a new rivalry in AA. The Vikings and Wildcats battled in a shootout for 48 minutes but,...

One third of the way into the 2014 season and the field is taking shape quite nicely, we have some traditional powers and some new kids on the block. Most satisfying for us here at BGH, there never seems to be any shortage of Big Games to choose from on a given weekend. Kudos to the WPIAL football steering committee for their expertise and vision. Just as there is no shortage of Big Games there seems to also be no shortage of articles calling themselves Big Game Hunting. You would do well for yourself to stick here with the original and, best I can tell, the only one that features an actual...

Avonworth had no problem at home Monday evening with Class AAA opponent Hampton in this non-section matchup, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-15) over the Talbots. Game 1 proved to be the closest of the night, as Hampton had a 4-2 lead, but that proved to be the Talbots only lead of the evening. Tied at 6, Avonworth ran of three unanswered points to lead 9-6 and the Antelopes never looked back. Avonworth would add two more 3 point rallies and then grabbed the victory by scoring 7 of the games last 8 points. The Antelopes jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 6-1 in game two as Hampton would get no...
