In this feature titled “Coach’s Corner”, I will be interviewing a different coach every week and asking them questions about their personal life and about coaching. Hopefully their answers will not only shed some light on how they coach their respective teams, but also allow readers to get to know the men behind the fields/courts. One of the main reasons behind the West Allegheny baseball team’s success this season has been pitching. The Indians number of losses (1) is close to the team’s ERA (1.29). But the Indians are certainly a capable offensive team also, and one of the leading hitters is, of all things, a ninth-grader. Austin Hendrick is a West Allegheny freshman, not even old enough to drive yet. But he leads West Allegheny in driving in runs. Hendrick has 17 RBIs and also leads in home runs with three. He is fourth on the team in average at .370, his slugging percentage is a team-high .704 and his OPS is 1.218...

Much like Jordan Geist was the featured attraction in the boys' side, Connellsville senior Madison Wiltrout had all eyes on her at the 2017 WPIAL Track and Field Championships at Baldwin High School. While Wiltrout did not break her own record in the javelin throw, she still captured Class AAA gold in convincing fashion, in the process becoming a four-time WPIAL champion. The Falcons' standout achieved a distance of 154-10.00, well ahead of second-place finisher Brianna Spirnak of Elizabeth Forward, whose throw measured 137-11.00. In 2015, Wiltrout set the all-time WPIAL mark of 181-00. In...

In each individual event at Thursday’s WPIAL Individual Track and Field Championships, medalists were crowned. None were as dominant as one though as AAA field athlete Jordan Geist, who not only won both of the events he competed in, but did so in dominating fashion, winning by a large margin in the AAA Shot Put and Discus events. Geist, a four-time champion at the meet, set new records in both events, while representing the Knoch Knights. Also joining the Arizona-commit by winning two events were North Allegheny’s Ayden Owens, Ambridge’s Isaac Elliott and Riverside’s Lance Fisher. Seneca...
