MSA Sports Top Ten - WPIAL Football Playoff Rankings

Seeding All 16 Playoff Teams in All Four Classifications
Share |

OK, let's clear the air on what the WPIAL Football steering committee will do on Monday. They will NOT rank the teams, they will seed them. Big Difference. They attempt to determine the top 2, then the top 4 and then the top 8 teams in each classification.

However in football, sometimes their hands are tied based on home field advantage for the top 8 seeds. For example, you could make the argument that Neshannock is the fourth best team in Class A. But you can't seed the Lancers in the top eight because they are on the road with an 8-1 record after tie-breaker points and head-to-head gave the top two spots in the Class A Big 7 Conference to Sto-Rox and Rochester.

So sometimes the committee has to be creative. Again, it is NOT a straight 1 through 16 rank.

You can find out how the brackets turned out Monday night with the UPMC Sports Medicine WPIAL Football Playoff Pairings Show from 7pm to 9pm here on the MSA Sports Network.

Remember, the First Round matchups work this way:

Are there too may teams making the play offs? The season goes so long, why not eliminate one round? The first round is usually a joke anyway, most team have losing records. This way schools are playing into basketball season.

With the understanding that the top 8 get home games, I'm not sure I would go the route MSA did on the class A bracket.  Looking at your top 8 it is clear that the Tri-County South teams (BC & JMorgan) should be spots 7 & 8.  There's no way those teams are that much better then the other top 6, especially with BC's loss to Frazier.  While you have to seed a certain way, it shouldn't be lost that your seed number (on paper) determines how hard of a road you have to Heinz.  Looking at the way you did your seedings doesn't seem to add up. Those Tri South teams have alot of proving to do, but so does Neshannock.  I have them ranked the highest of the 3rd/4th placed teams, and yes, I believe that would match them with Clairton in the secend round, but again, they have to prove themselves also. Just my opinion.1 Clairton vs 16 Frazier,  2 Sto-Rox vs 15 Carmichaels,  3 Monessen  vs 14 Apollo Ridge,  4 Rochester  vs 13 Avonworth,  5 North Catholic  vs 12 Union,  6 Springdale  vs 11 Bishop Canevin,    7 Beth Center  vs 10 Brentwood,    8 Jeff Morgan vs  9 Neshannock

How is Avonworth at 5-4 ranked higher than two teams at 7-2? Didn't Avonworth just lose to Wilkinsburg? How does a team with a losing record make the play offs? Holidaysburg is 3-6?

As far as a 7-2 team being seeded lower, I think I can answer that. Basically, those 2 team in the Tri-County South are playing in a VERY VERY weak conference. Most of the best teams in that conference could barely, if even, beat some of the bottom teams in other conferences. Therefore, their records are "inflated". No disrespect to those teams, but it is what it is. There are 4th place teams in the other 3 conferences who'd probably win or challenge for that conference crown after the teams that are left there now. Now a 3-6 record, i agree should not make the playoffs.

About 10 years ago, the WPIAL used to give a bye in the first round for the #1 and #2 seeds. This was primarily due to there not being as many divisions in the AAA. While I agree that it seems rather silly that a team 2-7, 3-6, or 4-5 would make the playoffs, the reason this happens is because the conferences are designed that 4 teams make it in each conference. The Ringgold Rams made the playoffs at 2-7 a few years back and got trounced by the Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings 45-0. One argument is why let our kids get demoralized? The other argument is we can sell tickets and make $$$ promoting this game to the community. In my example, Finleyville and Monogahela came out to support their school. The other issue is that the WPIAL changed to a 9 game instead of 10 game format. Having a odd numbers of games makes it possible for losing record teams to make it because divisional games are the ones that truly matter. One suggestion is to go to 8 total games to eliminate losing teams from making it and to prevent a lengthy year. For example, Team A goes 4-4, and they would make the playoffs; however, Team B goes 3-5, and they don't make it. If two 4-4 teams tie, then there could be a 1 game playoff. Any thoughts on my ideas? I love high school football. I just want things fixed.
