Serra Freshman Max Kaminsky Wins Inaugural WPIAL Boys D-II Golf Title

Share |

At 99 year old Youghiogeny Country Club, the WPIAL Boys Division II Golf Championships were played Wednesday. There were 18 groups that teed off on either the compact front nine or the wide open back nine beginning at 9:00 AM with a total of 56 golfers. When the first two groups finished around 1:15 PM most of the scores were in the high 80's or mid 90's, nothing to shake up the assembled media or fans. However when the third group finished and the scores were made official a score of 74 was posted next to the name of Freshman Max Kaminsky from Serra Catholic High School.

Many wondered if that score would hold, so did Kaminsky." I thought for sure a few guys would post lower scores and win it " he said. As everyone waited and watched every other group come in for the next 2 hours only two other golfers came close and Kaminsky walked away with the first ever Division II title.

"I chipped and listened to my I Pod," said Kaminsky when asked what he did while he waited to see if he won. No one knows for sure if a freshman has ever won a WPIAL Boys golf
title, the WPIAL was researching it, and the reporters and Internet broadcasters were scrambling to see if this was a first.

The course was wet and shot making was a crucial part of Kaminsky's game. "I was fortunate that I played in the qualifier here so I had a bit of an advantage in knowing where to lay up and how to play here," he said when surrounded by reporters afterwards.

Two Seniors Brian Circle and Shane Eichenlaub came the closest tieing for 2nd with 3 over par 75.

Kaminsky along with 11 other golfers will move on to the Boys Division I golf championship on Wednesday October 6th at Longue Vue Country Club in Verona. They will try to qualify for the PIAA State championships.
