Does good pitching beat good hitting? It certainly did on a warm and sunny Tuesday. There were eight WPIAL baseball games. They keep waking up and North Allegheny and Ambridge are wearing the gold. A couple of thrillers at drenched Martorelli Stadium in the North Hills produced gold for one decorated program and one first time champion. Peters Township won the Battle of the Indians with Shady Side Academy to capture the schools second straight and fifth WPIAL Division I title in the last seven years while Shaler is celebrating a first ever WPIAL girls lacrosse Division II crown as the Titans edged the Chartiers Valley Colts. The 2013 WPIAL Softball Playoffs resumed in Week Two on Monday with Round Two action in all four classifications. The top two seeds in each classification have qualified for the Final Four, but there are some surprises as well into the Semifinals. In the fifth anniversary of WPIAL boys lacrosse, won school captured gold for a third time while the other enjoyed their first ever golden crown. Mount Lebanon held off North Allegheny in the Division I finals to keep their streak of winning every other year in tact (2009, 2011 and 2013) while Seton-LaSalle knocked off the Quaker Valley Quakers for the Rebels first ever WPIAL boys lacrosse championship in the Division II title match. She is only a sophomore, but it’s not too early in Brianna Schwartz’s career to come to this conclusion: She is one of the top distance runners in the history of the WPIAL.Schwartz had already done some impressive things during her career, and what she did at Thursday’s WPIAL track championships put her among the best in WPIAL history. The 2013 PIAA Class AAA Boys Team Tennis Finals ended the same way the 2012 championships ended a year earlier, with District 1 champion Conestoga beating WPIAL winner Shady Side Academy as the Pioneers captured their third straight state title. One superstar female athlete is winding down her historic scholastic career while another is not even halfway through and she's breaking records. It was a two team show Thursday at the WPIAL Track and Field Individual Championships from Baldwin High School on the boys side.  In AA, the Washington Little Prexies returned to their peak form and performed well, taking the majority of the medals. The Little Prexies goal going into the event was to avenge their second place finish in last year’s 4x100 meter relay and they were successful.
