On a hot and humid afternoon and evening, five WPIAL games were featured on the first Saturday of the high school football season. Here are the top five performances from players who overcame the sauna like conditions to lead their team to a victory that left their opponents in their 2011 openers…a little steamed.

Here are the latest WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League football standings through Thursday of Week Two of the 2011 high school football season. Standings are updated after Thursday, Friday and Saturday scholastic gridiron action each week here on the MSA Sports Network.

WPIAL/City League Week 1 Saturday Football Scores

The curtain rose for most WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League teams on Friday night. Then it was time for ten more district teams to lace up their spikes for the first time in 2011. Three games took place under the hot sun in the afternoon while the evening haze was the backdrop for two more scholastic gridiron contests.

This is the smallest the City League has ever been as the league now has only eight teams. Schenley and Peabody closed, but there is a new program in the City League.

Sterling Marte Sets Record in Altoona Curve Win at Bowie Monday

Aaron Pribanic's six innings of one-run ball combined with a four-run first inning was enough to lift the Curve to a, 5-1, series-opening win over the Bowie Baysox on Monday night at Prince George's Stadium. Starling Marte went 3-for-5 to pass Nate McLouth and become the franchise leader for hits in a season with his single in the seventh inning.
