Class AAAA and Class AA teams had their fun in the sun on Tuesday, now it was time for WPIAL Class AAA and Class A teams to enjoy their postseason lid-lifters. Some of the game might have been closer than expected, but in the end, the top four seeds in both classifications are moving on to the Quarterfinals next week. The turn-around from the First Round to the Quarterfinals was a quick one for all but one WPIAL baseball playoff team. 63 teams cut to 32 on Monday, then 32 shrunk to 16 48 hours later. But now the Final Four is set in each classification with the Semifinals set for next week. The curtain rose on the 2013 WPIAL Softball Playoffs on Tuesday....well, at least for half the postseason field. Whle the Class AAA and Class A team will have to wait until Thursday, Class AAAA and Class AA teams had at it to get the postseason off to a flying start. While most of the results were expected, there was one eye-brow raiser in each class. Here are recaps from the 12 softball games played on Tuesday. For the first time in several years, opening day of the WPIAL baseball playoffs was not affected by the weather. On second thought, it was not affected by wet weather as chilly, brisk temperatures made if fell more like late-March rather than mid-May. But make no mistake about it, this was playoff baseball as 64 teams shooting for four championships was cut to 32 squads on one day. The 2013 WPIAL Baseball Playoffs opened Saturday afternoon with one lone Preliminary Round contest. With the Class AAA 16th-seed decide, the stage is now set for a very busy First Round in all four classifications on Monday. Since 2004, Sewickley Academy has sat atop the WPIAL Boys Team Tennis Double A classification as champion. Call it a Golden Decade. The streak continued Thursday as the Panthers captured their 10th straight district team tennis crown with a victory over Mars. It's not as long, but in Class AAA, Shady Side Academy swept past North Allegheny to win a 3rd consecutive tennis title for the Indians.
