It was a race against Mother nature Wednesday afternoon in Western Pennsylvania…six games were successful while two will have to try again on Thursday. Of the games that got it, we saw dominating performances, an unreal comeback and a see-saw shootout. Everybody wants to be #1 when a playoff bracket comes out, however here in the District 7 Softball postseason, the third-seed has been golden. All four #3 seeds have made it through three rounds and are now title game bound. Six Final Four games beat the rain on Wednesday with a suspended Class AAA and an entire Class AAAA game still to be played on Thursday before concluding Round Three. Does good pitching beat good hitting? It certainly did on a warm and sunny Tuesday. There were eight WPIAL baseball games. Five ended in shutouts and the combined score of the losers in the other three games was three…one run each. Pitching took center stage in the Final Four with five shutouts and a total of three runs allowed in the three other final results. In the end, South Park and Quaker Valley remain unbeaten and the first top-seed of the district postseason fell as Serra Catholic fell in Class A. Four teams with perfect records as section champions will battle for a pair of District 7 boys volleyball championships after the Final Four results from Tuesday night. While Bethel Park in Class AAA will be playing for the schools first ever volleyball crown and Derry in AA searches for its second district title and first since 1988, its been there done that time for both North Allegheny and Ambridge. A year ago, it was the Year of the Indians in district girls lacrosse with Peters Township winning their fourth WPIAL crown and first since 2009 while North Hills captured its second straight Division II championship. This year, it will be a battle of the Indians in the Division I title match as Peters Township faces Shady Side Academy. Chartiers Valley qualifies for the Division II championship where they will face Shaler. The 2013 WPIAL Softball Playoffs resumed in Week Two on Monday with Round Two action in all four classifications. The top two seeds in each classification have qualified for the Final Four, but there are some surprises as well into the Semifinals. Winning a WPIAL boys lacrosse title has never happened for the North Allegheny Tigers. Winning a WPIAL boys lacrosse championships has become very odd. While the Tigers will play for their first crown on Thursday, the Blue Devils are trying for their third after winning it all in 2009 and in 2011. In D-II, both Seton-LaSalle and Quaker Valley battle for their first ever boys lacrosse crown. She is only a sophomore, but it’s not too early in Brianna Schwartz’s career to come to this conclusion: She is one of the top distance runners in the history of the WPIAL.Schwartz had already done some impressive things during her career, and what she did at Thursday’s WPIAL track championships put her among the best in WPIAL history.
