Who needs two?  The final two games of the nine week WPIAL football regular season will take place on a pleasant Saturday afternoon in Western Pennsylvania. It is a fitting way to conclude rivalry week as well al long time rivals in the AK Valley and in Beaver County meet to do battle with both game here on the MSA Sports Network. Rivalry week brought the curtain down on the Friday edition of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season as teams scrambled for playoff spots or playoff positioning. Another great evening weather wise brought forth another batch of sweet performances from players throughout all four classifications. The 64 playoff football teams and their positions out of their respective conferences are now set. Only one Class A question remains as we head into the final day of the 2014 campaign. Now it is up to the WPIAL football steering committee to seed the 16 teams in each classification. Has there ever been a WPIAL football regular season that was so perfect as this one? Probably not. Fourteen teams go into the final night of the regular season with undefeated records. Two of them play (West Allegheny at Central Valley). That means there could be 13 teams that finish the regular season with perfect records. That would be the most in the WPIAL in a long time. 53 teams had clinched their ticket to ride on the golden highway starting next week, which left 11 spots up for grabs along with several conference titles, home field advantage in round one spots and increased seeding opportunities on the final Friday of the regular season. On the boys’ side, North Allegheny once again shined, as the Tigers cruised to a team victory, led by individual winner Matt McGoey, who edged teammate Hunter Wharrey for the top spot. Brianna Schwartz of Shaler captured a three-peat at the WPIAL Cross-Country Championships on Thursday, as she once again proved unbeatable at Cooper’s Lake Campground in Butler. The opening round of the district girls volleyball playoffs is in the books following Thursday's action in Class A and the rest of Class AA. Three double-digit seed animals are running free into Round Two as the #10 Pine-Richland Rams in AAA, the #11 Beaver Bobcats in AA and the #13 Avonworth Antelopes in Class A join the seven favorites in each of their classifications headed to Round Two on Tuesday. Welcome to Week 9 of the high school football season. Every so often, Chick’s Picks has a run in with an internet heckler, one who enjoys stirring up some healthy banter over predictions that are not necessarily agreed upon.  This occurred last week on Twitter, regarding one particular big-game pick. It was a good start for the District 7 teams on Tuesday in the 2014 PIAA Girls Team Tennis Playoffs as five of the six advanced out of the opening round. The gold rush continued Wednesday for the Central Valley girls golf team as the Warriors captured the 2014 PIAA Class AAA Girls Golf team championship with a four stroke victory at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York. It was the third straight state crown captured by Central Valley. Junior Maddy McDanel shot a low score of 75 among all the girls AAA participants while teammates Krista Sudar (89), Alex Bozich (92) and Amanda Scala (96) registered the four best scores and were the only team to have all four top scorers under 100 strokes. It was a good night for the three top-seeds and all three #5-seeds Wednesday night in the district soccer playoffs. Top teams Seneca Valley, South Park and Greensburg Central Catholic all won to advance to their classifications third round where they will face the three #5-seeds in Penn-Trafford, Montour and Mohawk. This is the 21st year the WPIAL has hosted a postseason tournament and while the years have come and gone, the names of the champions for the most part have remained the same. In Class AA, Shady Side Academy has won the title three straight years and 13 of the 20 years. In the 17 years there has been a Class AAA champion crowned, defending champion North Allegheny has captured gold in 12 of them. Week eight of the district college football slate sees another Thursday night game and some tough battles in the PSAC West and PAC. Here are previews of ALL the games including two that can be heard on the Network.
