MSA Sports Network Student Athlete Spotlight
MSA Sports Network
Student Athlete Spotlight - Jordan Foley Jordan J. Foley is a junior at Shady Side Academy, graduating class of 2007. He is a three Varsity sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball) along with one of the top students in his class. Currently he is playing football which he excelled as quarterback his sophomore year and is now leading the team in tackles from the Strong Safety position. His sophomore year he passed for 856 yards 9 TDs, rushed for 215 yards 2 TDs and selected All-Allegheny Conference Honorable Mention QB, and lead the team in special team tackles with 9. This year he leads the team in total tackles after five games with 51, (1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, 1 FR, 1 FF, and 5 deflections.) Along with playing quarterback and strong safety he is also the team long snapper. At 5'9 165 lbs he is probably the smallest long snapper in WPIAL football, but his 4.6 speed makes him deadly on punt coverage after the snap. He is a special teams leader on kickoffs and punts amassing 10 tackles already. He is also a co-captain in chosen games as a junior making him one of only a few juniors to be a captain.

His leadership and skill on the field are only exceeded by his diligence in the classroom. His freshman GPA was 3.7 and his Sophomore GPA was 3.8, currently he has three "A's", one "A+", and one "B+" in his five classes this year. (Shady Side Academy's GPA system is unlike other schools because other schools incorporate extra credit for AP classes, where as Shady Side offers nothing but AP classes.) He is currently in Chinese Level III-Advanced and over the three years he has taken the language he has recorded grades of "A+" freshman year and "A" sophomore year. He was also the recipient of the 2004 Peacock Chinese I prize for demonstrating an interest in the language and having the highest grade in the class. This year he is a Language Department Associate for Chinese which means he is the Co-Chairman of Chinese Club, organizer of Cultural Extravaganza, student informer to new parents about the language, and helps out the Department with any tutoring or help students may need.

Student Athlete Spotlight - Jordan Foley Along with the academic achievements he is also involved and is the head of many clubs. He is the president of the school's American Conservative Club which meets on a weekly basis to discuss politics and often debates the Liberal Alliance club. He was elected to a committee of 12 students called "Untucked" where they work all year to put on a benefit concert in May at Shady Side for charity (they usually raise around $10,000 to $20,000!). The concert takes months of planning and preparation. His job on "Untucked" is Talent Coordinator. This job consists of talking to agents and managers on a daily basis, landing a well known band (last year was the Clarks), setting up entertainment for the entire day, and wiring the stage. "Untucked" is a very popular charity group at Shady Side because everyone wants to be on it and everyone enjoys the concert. Jordan was elected to the most wanted job for his ability to understand, respect opinions, and he is articulate enough to talk to big time managers.

He is also a School Ambassador. An ambassador is elected by the teachers as a student that will best represent the school. His job is to tour prospective students and families around the school and give them a good impression about the campus and school itself. The admissions people at the school truly trust him with which students get into the school by giving him the responsibility to make a good impression.

And if those aren't enough activities he was also elected by the class President to be on Prom Committee this year, where he and 9 other students will plan, raise money, and set up junior and senior Prom. He enjoys being involved in school activities, playing sports, and still continues to get excellent grades in a notoriously difficult private school. He is a very good basketball player (set the freshmen team school record for three pointers made in a season: 71 in 2004.) He was on Varsity as a sophomore and will be considered to contribute at point guard on a State Championship contender team this year. He is a very solid baseball player too batting .475 in JV freshman and sophomore year and leading the team with a .629 on base average.

This year he will be playing a lot of varsity and possibly starting on a Shady Side team bound for playoffs. However, he has been excelling at football all three years of high school. He is not a very big kid but he has a lot of heart and will always give 100%. He is an offensive and defensive threat along with being highly respected by coaches and players.

Jordan's goal for college is to be accepted to the United States Naval Academy. He is very disciplined and hard working, so Navy will be a great fit for him. He has received several recruiting letters from other colleges, however, he has his heart set on the academics and experience of the USNA. His career goal for the future is to attend medical school and become a doctor either specializing in pediatric Neurology or becoming a Diagnostician. He also loves literature and poetry so if he gets accepted to the USNA he plans to major in their great English program for his first four years before Med-School. Jordan is truly a Student-Athlete, emphasis on student. He has a great head on his shoulders along with the ability to lead and excel athletically.
