| MSA Sports Network Student Athlete Spotlight |
|
Katie McLay is a senior at Apollo-Ridge High School. She carries
a 4.264 GPA and is enrolled in the college prep curriculum which
includes advanced placement courses. She is ranked first in a
class of 102 students. Katie is a member of the National Honor
Society and has been named to the high honor roll for each
grading period since she entered high school.
She has been named in Who's Who Among American High School
Students and is a member of the National Honor Roll. She
participates in Math League and Quiz Bowl, sponsored by the
Strongland Chamber of Commerce. She is an academic letter
winner. Katie has been invited to serve as student
representative on the Apollo-Ridge Strategic Planning
Committee. This committee will be reviewing the current
strategic plan and the current mission statement of the
school district.
Katie has been involved in basketball since 4th grade, playing
for the Indiana Wildcats AAU team. She joined the Apollo-Ridge
basketball program in 7th grade. Since entering high school,
she has played on the varsity team, is a 2 year starter and
so far has earned 3 basketball letters, playing the forward
position. Her stats for the 2004/05 season are: 11.9 ppg, 8.0
rpg and 3.4 assists per game. Katie is a member of the varsity
volleyball team. She has earned 4 letters in volleyball, a
starter for 3 years. She was named to the 2004 Valley News
Dispatch second team. Katie serves as a volunteer with the
middle school volleyball and basketball teams, assisting
the coaches with the younger players. She is a member of the
track and field team as a thrower. She has earned 3 athletic
letters for track and field.
Katie has been named as the Apollo Area Lions Club Student of
the Month for October, 2005.
During the summer of 2005, Katie participated in the Silver
Ring Thing summer internship. Silver Ring Thing is an abstinence
program for teens. This included traveling to Atlanta, Georgia
to present the program to youth attending Mega Fest. Katie
also volunteers at the local food bank.
She is involved in many activities at school. She is currently
a student reporter for the Indiana Gazette. She writes a weekly
column about activities taking place at Apollo-Ridge. She has
served as a sports reporter for the school newspaper and the
yearbook staff. Katie plays the flute and piccolo in the high
school concert band. She has been selected to attend the
Armstrong County Band festival in the spring. She has served
on the high school band council.
Katie has been a member of the Apollo-Ridge Student Council
throughout high school, participating in many events such as
providing a luncheon for area senior citizens during the holiday
season. Katie has also served on the prom planning committee
for the 2005 high school prom. She is very active with the
Drama Club and has served in various capacities such as: light
and sound management; box office organization; and, most recently,
as a member of the prop and stage committee, she makes sure the
appropriate props are on the stage during the production.
Katie will be attending a 4 year college. Her goal is to have a
successful career in law.

| How to Get Your Student in the Spotlight |
|
Balancing sports, schoolwork, and other activities is one of your
child's greatest challenges. We at MSA Sports would like to
spotlight some of these students who do just that - and do it WELL!
Parents, teachers, family members and friends, we need your help
identifying students to feature in the Student Athlete Spotlight.
Send a photograph of the student, along with some biographical
information. Student bio should be brief (2 or 3 paragraphs) and
include sport played and position, academic and other honors, GPA,
extracurricular activities, and any other information that helps to
showcase the achievements and character of this student athlete.
Once your child is selected we will send you a permission form to
allow us to post the student's picture and profile. Please
